Faith in the continuation of life after physical death is important to most people and is recognised by all religions in one form or another. One of the greatest attractions of Spiritualism is that it looks at the subject in complete frankness.

Life in the World of Spirit

Differing accounts have been given of life in the World of Spirit, many being the ideas of men on the Earth Plane who, although claiming great theological knowledge and expertise, have confined their ideas to doctrines laid down by man-made religions, which discourage communication with Those in the Spirit World for reasons best known to themselves. Those who do communicate with Those in the World of Spirit receive differing accounts of what life is really like there and Spirit Communicants often appear to contradict one another but this is due to the fact that many Communicants have not gained a total experience of the life surrounding them in the various spheres and therefore cannot present a totally accurate picture of what life there is really like.

However, it should be remembered that should a person from another planet in our Universe contact an Arab, an Eskimo or an Englishman and ask what life is really like here on Earth, it is likely that he would receive differing accounts that could cause a great deal of confusion. Contradictions or not, we are continually receiving confirmation of the continuation of life after the physical death of the body and it is a comforting thought that we will meet our deceased loved ones again.

What is life really like in the World of Spirit? We are fortunate in that we have a mountain of information which presents a picture of what we can expect when we finally get there. A deceased priest, communicating with a close friend on this Plane through automatic writing, explained the period from his Passing to the early experiences of returning back to the World of Spirit. He wrote:-

“I passed slowly but peacefully, after a long illness. I had the sensation of rising from my sickbed and being met by a fellow priest, a very good friend who had pre-deceased me, who took me by the arm. I felt myself rising upwards and then suddenly my feet were on the ground again.

“I opened my eyes and saw a house and a garden very similar to that in which I had been living whilst on Earth. My guide told me that it had been built by my own efforts and with the help of friends. I was advised to have a good rest, which I did”.

The deceased priest went on to describe that when he woke up again he was once more joined by his friend and was taken for a short tour, in which he was shown beautiful gardens, orchards and birds. In the distance he saw a city. He went on to say that he joined a group of people who were bathing in a lake. As he emerged from the water, greatly restored spiritually, he noticed that his clothes were not wet, the water just running off them. He also noticed that there was no apparent sign of age in the people around him.

He was taken to a Hall of Rest, which is for those who have suffered a long illness or violent death. A great shaft of light descended on the building. The floors and walls were carpeted in a soft tapestry and on couches lay sleeping figures. Moving quietly among them were a number of men and women, watching over them in a labour of love. Outside, in the gardens, friends and relations, clad in beautiful robes of many colours denoting their spiritual progression, were waiting.

The priest went on to explain that he was taken to a nearby city, which was devoted to the arts, and was taken around various halls devoted to the practice of the arts, including music, painting, literature, the sciences, fabrics and tapestries. He was also taken to a school where people, who had the misfortune to miss the benefits of knowledge and learning, were able to equip themselves intellectually, each student following his course of study independently. The priest noticed that daylight was perpetual.

That is only one account of a man and his early experiences on returning to the World of Spirit. Many others have returned to us in communication and have described similar experiences.

From these communications we have learned that many loved ones come to greet new arrivals into the World of Spirit upon decease. Devoted parents meet their children, thwarted or faint-hearted lovers get another chance of happiness together and many who had lost each other through no fault of their own meet again. All sorts of animals come to meet their loved ones (yes animals do have souls and also survive physical death). However, there must be a great bond of love and affection to bind people together and husbands and wives who were not compatible on Earth will not necessarily be re-united upon return to the World of Spirit.

Everyone has some task to perform. Some help lost souls, who through their own narrow minds have not yet arisen. Others work in halls of rest. Many work with children and animals who have preceded loving parents and masters. Everybody has some job to do and this work is done with tender love and care. At the same time personal spiritual development carries on and people maintain a close link with guides and helpers in their journey along the infinite pathway to spiritual progression.

In the great scheme of evolution, nothing changes very quickly. You will almost certainly live in a house, with a garden and flowers. There is an etheric counterpart of everything you need which you have been used to on the Earth Plane.

You will not suddenly be placed into a vast expanse of spirituality. Spiritual growth goes in gradual stages as you pass into a higher state of consciousness and you will attract many experiences as you evolve.
